I'm leaving tomorrow to attend the Pacific Northwest Writers Association's annual conference in Seattle. I've persuaded Jim to stay home with his mother. It would be a very boring three days for him. I tried to find a plane ticket that fits my budget, to no avail, so I guess I'll be driving. With a good audio book and cruise control, I can make it easily in one day. I also find the lodging costs at the Hilton a bit beyond my means, even with the discount they offer for writers, so I'll stay nearby in an affordable unit. I'll post an update when I find out about how the competition goes.

For some strange reason, I'm not very ginned up about this.

    Hi, Barb,

Has it ever occured to you that that "old white kid horse that Daddy captured on the Indian Reservation, as a slick, that he never beat up" was a white Sioux medicine pony, the vessel that carried the spirit/soul of the tribe - particularly their spiritual leader - among other things?

    Pardon the paraphrase.

    Bye,
    Norma

No, I didn't know that. Would you possibly have a link that you could post here, where I could get more information about this subject? I can easily believe Minn (Minnehaha) was a medicine horse. She was the only safe adult in our lives. I'd love to write a kids' book from her perspective.

I'm not a good web-searcher but here is a site for a woman who speaks to/for medicine horses.

    http://www.medicinehorsewoman.com/

This is a site that talks about plains horses including the medicine horse.

    http://www.indianhorse.com/about-the-registry/history-of-the-american-indian-horse/

The Sioux site may have more about it, and I think the Indians in Canada are still allowed to practice their religion, including that of the horse. The Blackfeet who owned Jim's and Kathleen's leased land also still practiced that to some degree.

Also, if you like really weird, both Minn and Sun-up were part of the place Daddy built for himself after he died. They just were there for him to help him heal until he could feel the loving ceiling that surrounded his world, then they would move on. Minn is Minn, but Sun-up is "a sack of oats" or something like that. I don't remember the phrase Daddy used that meant a horse is worthless. Haven't been there in a while, so don't know if the place is still there. Never visited Mom.

    P.S.
When I tried to visit Mom, I wasn't allowed. She was still too sick -- for a long time, until I quit trying. Somebody else hurt Daddy, but she hurt herself, and that's lots worse.

I'll explore this; sounds extremely interesting. Let's meet again by e-mail. Love and Peace to you.

While we're on the subjects of built worlds, The Monroe Institute just got accreditation for their more important dooze. Since I've gotten my education -- or as much as I'm going to get -- I didn't log the particulars, but I think it is continuing education credit toward your masters or doctorate. They have the scoop on their website.
